Need a primary clutch for a 98 700 XC. Bushings are shot and the clutch is worn sideways! Was checking on ebay and am wondering what sleds use the same clutch as mine. I'm pretty sure 98 was the start of a new one but how long until they changed it again? Would a clutch from a 01 800 be the same?

Mad - Thanks for posting this as my 98 700 RMK clutch is in the same shape yours is in sounds like. I also looked at ebay and am not sure what the differences would be. I do know we have the wide rollers, but not sure when they started that and what engines. My 97 XC 440 has the narrow rollers. I'm not sure about buying a clutch off a picture either, I sure would like to inspect in my own hands. Please let us know if you find something elsewhere and post it here. We need to start building some info like this for this site.

Not for sure, but I think the 800 will fit the 700. I know it will fit on the 2000 700 bottom end. If it is the same tapper, buy a new 800 clutch. They have the beefer clutch. Usually a new clutch was in the $400 range.

I actually have a spare clutch for my 08 700 but I think the liberty twins have a different taper than the cfi twins. I know the puller is different at least.
Just wasn't sure if all the liberty twins had the same taper from the non VES years through the VES years in 05. |

all domestic twins 600-900 use the same clutch taper through 2006 --30mm the new cfi 06 and up sleds which are build on the small block platform are 32mm.
so if it is off of a 600 big block or 7-900 they will work. the 800 clutches had a beefier spider and the 900 had an even stronger spider both those clutches are considered low pin clutches also and give more belt squeeze at lower rpm's |

I would buy a new clutch and have it balanced. Why buy a used clutch and have it take out the crank? Been there done that$$$

I was under the impression that all the cfi 7-8-9 all had the different taper. But I've been wrong before and will be again! Did the XLT's - XCR's have the wide rollers. I am not necessarily looking at used clutches, but alot of people advertise "New take-off's" that are cheaper than new. If a 8 - 9 clutch is used would the bolt for that clutch be needed? Are the threads in the crank the same?
Thanks! |

Funny how people say you should balance a clutch before using it. What difference would it make? Aren't they balanced from the factory? Isn't that what the x's are there for and all the drilled out holes?

Ok... the clutch used on the edge and wedge were the p-85 polaris primary. The quads use a similar model that is a different number. The taper is the same for these models. One thing to note is the 800 was slightly different. It had a different bushing and req'd a different washer on the clutch bolt. If you use a 700 bushing/washer on the clutch bolt it will pre-load the clutch and cause clutch drag. If you inspect the outside end housings on the p-85 you sill see the difference between the smaller engines and the 800 engine clutches. The outer housing is beafier and the bushing is bigger. As far as new vs re-built? I have run rebuilt primaries and new. If i was to go on the balance scale... the rebuilds ussually are balanced better than factory. As far as which is better? It depends on your budget and how you feel about a rebuild. Remember: A lot of the bugs and fixes are discoverred in the aftermarket sector. Many rebuilders spend the time to ensure these are addressed and corrected. Options are available when you order a rebuilt clutch. Possibilities are endless... remember the old trick of shaving the sheives of the clutch? Trick of the trade. Think degrees, think thou.... ask questions and listen. This is new era with turbo's and fuel injection... remember the good old boys were innovative. Remember the good old boys tinkerred and toyed with old school stuff. This is what todays super mods are built upon. Knowledge of the past!!! Gained by experience... trial, error and intelligence!!! It's your call~!!

Mass produced and balanced you can't always trust that, the weights may be out too (depending on what type). I have my clutches balanced and rebuilt every year depending on mileage, my 2005 rmk clutch was out pretty bad from the factory balancing the primary made a huge difference. JMT
