Default No Oil Consumption '03 RMK 600

We have a 2003 RMK 600 and during a ride yesterday found the coolant leaking after we stopped...After opening the hood we found that the machine had not consumed any oil after approximately 50 or so miles. We ended up adding oil to the fuel tank to get back........Any suggestions?

Change out the oilpump. I have one off an '04 VE, along with the PERC cdi that I'm willing to part with.

May have just lost the belt that drives the oil pump and waterpump. Where is the antifreeze coming from? If out of the overflow it could be just overheating since the waterpump is not functioning since the belt is gone. Easiest way to check is to take the 2 small bolts off that hold the oil pump on. Pull the rope over and see if the shaft that drives it is turning. If not, the belt is broke.

Yep, sounds like the water pump belt. Regardless, it should be changed out. If you went 50 miles, I'd be looking at the pistons for damage.

That smallblock 600 twin has a gear driven oil pump. On the other side of the crankcase is the waterpump.

What he said. They are shaft driven off the crankshaft. I have never seen the driveshaft for the oil/water pump fail, but I suppose it could happen. You would think that there would be serious damage though.

I noticed that the water pump and oil pump were on different sides of the engine..Has anyone ever heard of the oil sender failing? Would that not allow oil to be sent out of the container.. or.....

What about the oil cap? My old man's '07 RMK 600 155 recently seized with only 790 EASY miles...Our local Polaris dealer advised they believed it had something to do with the oil cap so they gutted it out, rebuilt the engine (he lost bearings on the crank shaft), and no problems since.

I dont know if that sled has a vent on the oil tank, or if it is vented through the oil cap. A blocked vent will prevent oil from being pumped. If you remove the oil cap, and there is a little suction coming from the tank, I'd say you have a blocked vent.

To check and see if you have free flowing oil from the tank to the oil pump, there should be a bleeder screw on the oil pump. Back it out a little and see if oil starts leaking out. If so, you have good flow to the oil pump. To insure that the pump is working, remove the pump, take off the lines that flow to the carbs, and use a power drill with a flat screwdriver head to turn the pump. A little bit of oil pooling at the end of the lines that run to the carbs insures you have proper pump operation.

I have two freinds with 600's and they use vary little oil. The last time we all rode togthere we put on 180 miles on the trail they both only used about two cups of oil I would say mix so oil in with the gas and run it for a bit see if it really is not useing oil or if it is just that easy on oil. the other thing is when an oil pump fails they usally go to defult witch is wide open. you would be useing a ton of oil if that were the case. unless the cross shaft is out then listen to other peeps in this thread.
