I agree with Ultra. New backing plates with all the new stuff on them is best. Have the drums trued as well. Your brake controller has a gain adjust too, it can be increased for the load you are hauling by rolling the adjustment upward or higher on the setting. I usually adjust the tension on the brakes (axle) with the controller on the minimum setting (when the brakes are applied) until they start to drag & leave them there. Adjust the gain from there as needed.

Sled trailers are used for more than they are capable of sooner or later .

You just mentioned another problem that didn't include ultrarider's solutions .

Just taking a stab at it but I would say the forward axle was over loaded , that's why the inside tread is shot . It needs to be replaced otherwise your just gonna prematurely eat tires .

If it wasn't square it would just scrub the tread off not just eat the insides .

I'm also guessing that since the front axle is showing multiple problems is because the loads where carried forward on the tongue . That's another mistake , a good trailer needs very little tongue weight just enough to keep the trailer from wagging going down the road .

Yeah I understand weight distribution, but can't do much about where the sleds sit on the deck. Tie downs are in their positions....

As for the axle, if it was pointed off to one side, it would chew the inner edge of one tire and the outer edge of another. I'm gonna measure this sunday

Yup.... rusted to all hell. Bearings were also over greased causing grease to cover the magnet and shoes. Ordered 4 loaded brake kits. Lots of work ahead!

Pretty quick and painless going the route of new loaded plates. Make sure to adjust your shoes up tight after you install them. Just buy all new bearings and races while you're at it. Don't worry about trailer issues, just where to find the best snow.

I did what ultra mentioned. New loaded units and I also got the new drum and hub combo for mine. 4 place open was easy to do, even in the rain.

Well got all 4 new loaded backing plates on, wired in the magnets and packed the wheel bearings everything went well. Adjusted the shoes so they drag just barely.

And.... the brakes don't do much. Turned my controller up all the way and towed an empty trailer about 40 mph. Of I hit the lever over max brake, the trailer barely tugs on the truck...
I guess this weekend we will test voltage at the magnets.... not sure what else it can be. Maybe there's resistance or corrosion in the wires between the truck and the brakes...
