It's pretty bare, yeah.

Backcountry event today was pretty cool. If you're into backcountry riding and want to show off your skills in a race setting, that's the way to do it. That circuit's got a lot of potential.

Hillclimb guys were sending riders up the hill all day long. They'll keep doing that all weekend.

RMSR's going tomorrow with sno-x in the morning and hillcross in the afternoon. Hopefully my sled and I make it to the evening.

Sunday's X-games hillcross. Should be a good race. If I don't wreck myself tomorrow i'll be on the mountain shooting pics.

Just went live with photos from BCRA's backcountry event. Check 'em out, they got a pretty cool thing going.
https://www.facebook.com/backcountryridersassociation

Course is set up ... in the backcountry. Go figure, right?
About a mile up the hill from the parking lot was the race course.

When you're up, line up at the gate.

In addition to the usual helmet/vest/knees/tether requirements, you'll also need your backcountry gear - Beacon (checked at the starting line), pack, shovel, and probe.

Because you're in the backcountry, in avalanche terrain. The slope I was shooting from was a comfortable 37.

When you're given the "Course open", you get 5 minutes to show your stuff. There's a couple of judges at various points throughout the course.

Half the points come from the terrain you choose within the course.

There's some open lines you can pull

And some tighter, more techical lines.

The other half comes from style.

So do something cool in front of a judge, but try not to fall off.

You'll lose points for a tether pull

Or if you let go of the handlebars.

So it's in your best interest to not hit the trees.

They'll announce "30 Seconds" on the PA, and all the judges raise a flag to let you know.

Pull one more line for those last-minute points

Then exit the course and wait for the judges to tally up points.

This year they did a Terracross race too. Wasn't real big, not a lot of drivers, but I caught some of it friday morning.

I like this lens.

Snocross from Saturday morning coming up next (when I get through them...)

Right on, that Back country thing is cool. Would better if it was a nice blanket of powder. So did everyone just sidehill bck and forth up the hill for 5 minutes? Or do u find a way up, come down, go back up a different way???

Little bit of everything. It seems like most guys kinda focused their energy where they rode the strongest, but still did something near the other judges to get their points.
There was one judge set up about halfway up this hill, some guys popped out of the trees towards the bottom and shot up it

Other guys sidehilled through the trees and hopped that drift further up.

The guys on snowbikes were picking lines that were way tighter than where sleds could go

And the sleds stuck more to the open stuff, with the additional horsepower and track they had an easier time pulling climbs the bikes had to sidehill across.

Most riders would see a line and take a few stabs at it.
