Default 97 Cadillac Deville

So, last summer I picked up a car for the kids to "cruise" to High School in style. 97 Cadi Deville, with 160,xxx miles. Was a "Grandpa's car. The Son did not want it and the grandson was not old enough to drive. Had some electrical issues, fixed. Had some minor oil and break leaks, fixed.

Then the water pump went out as the daughter was driving it. The info-center on the dash said "Coolant temp is high, shut down engine". So she drove it home in a panic.

Has the Northstar motor and 7 qts of oil so that helped I hope. Car runs and drives, around the block.

Kinda torn on what to do. Do I junk it? Donate it? Repair it for more than I paid for it? Paid $850 as it sat. Now it has a Pioneer Blue Tooth stereo and AMP, new tires and a drivers door switch.

Tires, stereo and AMP by previous owner.

Figure its going to need a water pump and intake and or head gaskets too. If it was in the summer. I would have torn it down already and given it the "I can do this!!!" try. I've never done a head gasket, yet...

Just venting for now.

Mac

That's an all aluminum 4.9 V8. If it overheated, more than likely the heads are warped too. First thing I would do is pressurize the coolant system & see if it holds pressure. If it doesn't, theres a leak somewhere. Heads would need resurfaced & all new gaskets (with the pump) & you will have more $ tied up in the repair than the price you paid for the whole rig. If it holds pressure, Id just replace the pump & thermostat & give it a shot. If you decide to donate it instead, get a receipt to deduct from your taxes.

My mom has had 2 of these. She had a 97 or 98 SLS and a 04 Deville. I don't know if she ever got either of them hot but they both lost water, she had gotten into the habit of checking the water on her own car. I think once you get it hot they are just trouble, but if you want something to bum around town you should be good to put the pump in it and lee any eye on the water.

these engines when hot start shutting down cylinders to save themselves
i would replace pump add bars leak and run it, watch to see if anything gets in oil, if not just keep running and watch for leaks
have had several hot and go in limp mode but none so hot that it wanted to shut off

Car had a warped head, two dead cylinders. Sent it to the salvage yard after we pulled the stereo and amp out. Wanted the boy to take the car apart to "learn some new skills". Not interested in it at all. Figured I was going to pay him and his friends to take it apart and all. NOT!!!!!
