Default Resto-project: 1980 Moto-Ski Mirage Special

I was not really on the hunt for another project, however I stumbled on this 1980 Moto-Ski Mirage Special online and brought back memories because this was the first snowmobile I can remember my dad having when I was little. However his was a 1980 Mirage II, so I guess you could say I "one-upped him" with the Special. haha My two young boys have been bugging me for a "kids sled" all winter so I figured this would be a good "father-son" project for them to get their hands dirty with and "earn" the ability to ride.

With that said, I bought it yesterday. Great condition for its age and being all original. Everything turns/moves freely and compression was good.
Aaaaannnddd.... for $100, I figured I could not go wrong for some father-son shop time!
This is the only picture I have so far. Kids were thrilled when I brought it home!

Will take some more pics this weekend as we start the cleaning/investigating/diagnosing processes.

Kids and I had a fun little tear down session today and I sent a few photos to my dad. Ironically there is a sticker from the dealership that the sled came from new and it's from the dealership that my dad worked at around that time! (Before my time, ha)

Going to be a fun restore!

Findings from tonight:
-sled has 130# in both holes
-found an original hand warmer kit still in the package in the storage box

-snowmobiles make good mice homes
-No spark on the mag side

Anyone know what these were for? rack or something?

Thanks! Certainly not going to be a complete restoration, but to clean it up enough to make it worthy of our annual snowmobile show and make it a somewhat reliable sled for the kids to learn to ride on.

The best part is the shop time and the lessons learned!
This morning's lessons were the art of siphoning old gas and drilling rivets out!

That looks like a pic from the "mash your finger while drilling rivets" lesson. I had to retake that one a couple of times.

Ha! Nope but it doesn't snow here anymore so that's the only job the snowblower has anymore is storing the xmas lights when they are not on the house.

Indeed! raise 'em right!
Spank 'em once and a while and teach them how to appreciate the little things!
Sorta like Dad and Grandpa did!
Haha

New points, condensers, and carb kits ordered this morning. Would really boost the kids confidence and enthusiasm if we could at least get it to start this weekend!
