Red face In Search of Snow: West Yellowstone

Our annual trip to West Yellowstone.
Load up the trailer thursday night, head up to XC's friday night, take off first thing saturday morning.

Snowmobile vids and audiobooks, munchies, and a tank full of fuel... off we go.

And 30-40mph headwinds most of the way there.

Thirsty hemi. :\

Sunday Test & Tune
Unload sleds, gear up ... met up with a few other rebels, then off to Tepee for the day.

XC gets clutching dialed in for elevation and snow conditions

Buncha snocrossers in this group... how'd you know?

First and worst wreck of the week... 'doo meets tree.

Get 'er out and down... "Doesn't look too bad from here..."

Snow's not bad, but still set-up and crusty in spots.

Back on the trail into town

"Guess that's why it topped out at 5500 RPM and wouldn't go more than 25m/h..."

Bumper, pipe, plastics... A-arms and s-module all look good.

Back to Tepee on Monday.

Elkaholic

Little bit of fresh snow on top, crusty and tracked out underneath.

Another good day, no wrecks. Back into town for a shower and dinner.... top off sleds and get ready to do it all again tomorrow.
Not a whole lot of snow in town... lots of pavement between trailhead and condo.

Tuesday... sled recovery. Couple of Winnipeg boys lost a new 174" skidoo down a mountain. Gear up, get a plan together, and off we go. Might need a lot of hands if it's stuck way down in a valley.

Sled ghost-rode down the hill... got really lucky. Glanced off a log kicking the sled sideways, then landed between two trees and came to a stop. A foot over in either direction and it'd have been in the tree, if it hadn't kicked sideways it probably would have gone off a cliff and deeper down into the ravine.

Highway 20 into town from the top

Continued onward up towards Lionhead

"My clutch is making bad noises"... rollers are shot, bushing's probably done for too.

Not much for snow out here, and with the low visibility up top we decided to pack it in and call it a day.

Wednesday... head out to the secret spot. Wanna know where it is? Book a backcountry tour with Ace Powder Guides... guaranteed to have a good time.

I still suck at snowmobiling. Helmet n' tekvest... good stuff.

Found some good snow, ended up being a killer day.

Thursday. Trailered up to Hi Country tavern... cuts out about 10mi of nasty whooped-out trails.

Made a new friend in the parking lot.... someone loves chasing snowballs.

Hit the trails back towards Cabin... This year there's rocks exposed that are usually buried under a few feet of snow. Snowmobile skis are good at locating those partially-buried rocks.

Tetons off in the distance

Heading back towards the burn area in Cabin

viewsdonotsuck.jpg

Snow this year lets you go just about anywhere, with significantly lower risk of avalanches than typical years.

Couple more inches of fresh snow, since we're far enough from town there's not a lot of tracks out here.

Back to the trucks, load up, and hit the road back to the cabin.

Everything all loaded up... head out saturday morning for another 12 hours in the truck. Lots of laundry to do at home.

it is amazing to see how the tetons rise above the rest of the landscape in person
