Default 900 cat drive shaft bearing

As a couple of you know, I fried my jackshaft bearing the other day.
"Thanks for the PM's"

So I'm replacing a couple of bearings.

I've got a quesiton about the chaincase side drive-shaft bearing (1602-051)

Superseeded to the (1702-179). It came with a seal.

The beveled end of the seal is supposed to be placed on the face of the bearing. OK fine enough.

The problem I'm having is that I thought it was supposed to be an oil bath bearing. If you place this new seal on the face of the bearing, then it will isolate that bearing from the oil.

So I'm figuring that I'll just trust the arctic cat engineers, and use it, but I'd like to know if this is supposed to be oil bath, or if it's a sealed grease bearing.

Service Mngr couldn't tell me.

Has anybody else questioned this?

The seal is supposed to keep oil from leaking out at the shaft. The oil stillcan get to the bearings and the O ring between the bearing and retainer is to keep the oil from running out around the outside of the bearing.

I got an answer from Arctic Cat (through my local service mngr).

The seal goes on just like in the bottom picture. The reason for the seal is that they have had problems with the oil washing out the grease, and also contaminants getting into the bearing.

Which answers my question about it being a sealed greased bearing.
