03 Escape- dead speedo

And no, its not the driveshaft bearing or the flimsy key in the end of the driveshaft. Cable is fine. How common are failures of the speedo itself or the drive unit under the secondary?

You can check the drive unit. Haven't seen many speedo failures, but it does happen. Usually drive shaft beaing failure when it doesn't work.

Yep. I should add that when it went, it wasn't all at once. It had been working fine in the AM, then on the way back going down the trail about 1/2 way back to the truck I looked down and the speedo was only reading 15mph. I know I was going about 40. It quit completely before I made it back to the truck.

use a cordless drill on low and recheck both ends again....90% of the problems, then rake unit off and giggle and listen for loose chit on the inside of the unit.

Pull that stupid speedo out and stick a vent there. I also have a speedo if you need one. I would make you a good deal.
