is the black plastic on the back of the tunnel that makes up the gas rack needed?

Not sure which sled but no, it strictly utilitarian. Might want to make sure the fasteners aren't fastening a u cooler as well though.

Nope it's really easy I think like 8 star screws. Like mine a lot better without the plastic.

sorry no you don't , i was installing a tunnel extension at the same time and hadn't hooked up the hoses yet when i snapped the pictures. you just have to remove several torx headed screws some under tunnel

Plastic's really there to protect the union where the short hoses go between the rails and rear heat exchanger. Also covers the taillight wire.

Yea, you could pull it off.... 4 or 6 screws under there and it's done. Just reroute or protect that taillight wire/connector; the red wire is +12v always-on, so if that grounds out it'll cause all sorts of electrical problems.

Routed mine underneath, used two layers of shielding and grommeted the holes. Just used some of the stock screw holes, widened a bit.
