Was thinking that I should put a 16 inch wide track as well, will a 16 fit under most older polaris chassis??

Guess it would depend on what your budget is for what direction you go.
780/809 Rotax triple into a Rev chassis is a very sweet mod sled, but even with used parts, might require more new parts than you'd prefer to spring for. I still think the late '90s 670 Summit's run very strong with lots of mod potential and are darn hard to beat on a budget. '00-03 XCR-800 is a great mod platform and with heads, pipes, reeds they push out around 180 peak HP. You can find 'em fairly cheap these days, I've seen beat up ones in the $1500 range. Before I did my Rev, I was collecting parts to convert a '99 ZRT-800 into a mountain mod sled. Had a super sweet Arrowhead tunnel, IQ-RMK skid, track, U cooler, etc. but just way more work than I had time/patience for. '99-02 ZRT-800 or TCat would make a very fun serious mod sled though. Easy reliable HP from those triples. If you don't care about the front end weight, it's the cats meow indeed. The upside here is that you don't have to worry about making engine mounts and such since the bulkhead and engine will stay intact. Don't forget or under-estimate the Yamaha MM-700 or MViper-700 either. With a new tunnel, Cat/Polaris skid, lightened front end parts, and triple pipes, these things pull hard and sound sooo sweet. There's just something about a triple triple ripped up the hill. Still if I could scrounge the parts cheap, I'd love to have an Edge chassis with a Cat 800/900 big bore twin under the hood. Those Union Bay & Cutler lumps still stir my soul like no other.

I do like the yami engines and that 700 triple is a great motor, I don't see as many 700 yami sleds being parted out as polaris triples that's for sure. The yami chassis is a heavy beast though and would have to change it up like you said. But, still, locally the 2000-2003 vipers are selling for 3500-4500 here, and I can get an XCR800 for 1700 even in the middle of the winter - so money wise I am still leaning towards the XCR800 - just want to make sure i get a reliable one that doesn't need a rebuild -- and the XCR chassis I can lighten up and use - not so with the viper chassis.
The edge 800 might be an option, they are fairly inexpensive here too. enough power? The cat sounds interesting but |

I had an '01 Edge 800 stretched out to 151, absolutely loved that sled. Non-VES 800 twin, mild porting, CPI twin pipes, reeds/spacers, LPI billet head, ATACC on the carbs, C&A skis, Cat secondary, Vertical Escape seat, clear tank, risers, Fabcraft bars, etc. Plenty of power to get me anywhere I needed to go.
XCR-800s pretty darn reliable, even tweaked. Mark Messingbrink had a very trick XCR based mod back in the day. 200+ reliable HP not far out of reach on them either. Plenty of people shoehorn the engine into Edge chassis or build up a watercraft triple too. Trust me, never ever been a Cat fan, but those Suzuki engine flat make HP and with aftermarket tunnels, hoods, a-arms, the weight will disappear. Another old school build would be an Ultra-680 too....

Does anyone know what the difference in weight is between an 800 polaris twin and triple?
Thanks |
