99 MMax 600 electrical issue

I have a 99 MMax 600 that keeps blowing out lights. this is what I've done so far and what I've found, can someone help me out in what to do next?

First, replaced DC voltage regulator and headlight, it ran great and the headlight worked properly(without seat mounted)

Then, when I reinstalled the seat and plugged in the tail light the lights blew again.

replaced the regulator again and tried it again without the seat, problem is still there so I checked the voltage at the headlight, its reading 36 volts AC... I'm thinking it should be DC, am I wrong? the wiring diagram is tough to read on my phone but its showing DC voltage regulator controls the lights...

somebody set me straight on all this. I've gotta have lights to ride

Check your stator. Pretty simple measurement with an ohmmeter, values and wire connections should be in the service manual.

Next thing I'd look at... Especially since you said it worked before you plugged in the taillight... is the wiring. Is there a spot where the wiring harness has rubbed through the insulation on teh wire, exposing the copper? Or is there a spot where the wires are pinched against seat/tunnel/plastic housings/etc? With the sled off, pull the bulb and use the ohmmeter between the positive terminal of the bulb and the tunnel. If you've got continuity there, there's a short to ground somewhere in the wire.

36VAC where there should be DC for sure sounds like a bad voltage regulator though.
