Scams on old people
My Grandma lost 200k to them and called me today claiming to need money for her co-pay at the doctors office. I think they're after her again talking her into scamming her family. I'm told it's like a gambling addiction, that they keep sending money in hopes of hitting it big enough to recover their losses.
Since it's my grandma, I beat feet to the Western Union place at K-mart and stood in line with the beaners to send money. Near as I can tell, you can send money to John Smith as long as they have the confirmation number. What a strange thing, anyone got the lowdown on how these scammers find people with a weakness? I'm told that the only way to save her from herself is to get a judge to declare her incompetent.

They mass market to people and wait for responses, then add your name to the list. You must live a ways away for having to do W.U. mail. Anybody(family) closer? Talk to her bank, they can likely help the most

It takes a special sort of criminal to steal from old folks. A lot of these scum are untouchable because they're foreigners. Another problem with illegals in this country.

Simpler than that.
Contact the local inspector generals office. I think every state has a special office that deals with abuse of old people, be it physically or financially. They can investigate and see if there is a problem. Also, the only way you can save her from herself is to power of attorney over her finances and while you are at that, get one for medical also. that way you can get all her bills sent to you and you would control where the money goes and what bills get paid. You put her on an allowance and let it go at that. We had to do that with the wifes great aunt. She paid ANY bill sent to her via mail. That is part of the problem. Old people are raised that if you owe money, you pay it. So they get a bill in the mail, they don't remember running up a tab someplace, but they must have or they wouldn't be getting the bill, so they pay it.

I also found that these scumbags carefully read and record all obituaries in the papers. Then they especially prey on widows. My mother in law got on the list of union firefighters, police and sherifs organizations that call and beg and then say they have to have a credit card number. These outfits have registered with the state secretary of state and have a post office box in Cheyenne so there is nothing the local police can do. I found the union office in Milwaukee and after some real hot discussions she doesn't hear from them much any more and we change the credit card number regularly and have it red flagged for these people. It's always the Federated Fire firefighters or police AFLCIO and they are VULTURES on old people.
