Default Steering shaft - what do you use?

Hi Guys, what type of metal do you use for your steer shaft? No bends in mine - it will be straight - want light and strong. Will be using a riser and carbon fiber bars.

I built a few for my Nytro from .065 and it's too thin, too much flex between the bushings. My next one will probably .125. You can go to a thinner wall thickness with a larger dia. tube. Pro RMK's have a 1 1/8 steering post. If it were me I'd buy the 1 1/8 bushings from the Pro which are only about $4 ea. and use .095 1 1/8 4130. 4140 is stronger if you can find it. It also depends on the length of the post and the distance between the bushings.

7/8 .035 will never ever live we tryed it on one of our shop sleds back in the day, it didn't make it one ride. I always recomend useing 1" and like SNWMBL said it depends on the span between the bushing, lately I've been using 1".156 wall on my posts so they doen't flex, its nice that we now have the option of 1 1/8 material with the polaris pro bushing

The strongest and stiffest no flex shafts I've built have been 1.125 chrome moly with around I'm thinking I did .058 and likely .049 would be strong enough. The large diameter really ups the strength over 7/8". Wouldn't ever build another 7/8" shaft. Do anything possible to get to 1.125. My first trial and errors were in the early 90's with 7/8" and even put an extra piece inside the top and it still flexed. Then figured out how to bore the bushings out went up to 1.125, thinner wall and a bunch lighter and no FLEX!

Great place for anything for fabrication is AirCraft Spruce. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/index.html Give them a call and they will send you a 800 page catalog with everything, aluminum chrome moly, fiberglass, carbon fiber, kevlar etc, nuts bolts fittings, heck you could build wings for your lighter than air sled and fly with the stuff they have.

Good Luck

Here is a failed real pretty XP experimental shaft I built out of 6061 T6, it was light but bent real easy near the welds.
