Ok, so Im not going to claim I know... well.... anything about venting, but if anything has anything to say about venting (ON A TECHNICAL, SLED RELATED BASIS) put it in here.
With that said.... I want to put some venting in my Pro-X... not gonna lie, mostly for cosmetic purposes, but I cant see where more air can hurt... as long as it stays air and not snow. I am thinking about some on the hood and some in the sides of the belly pan by the clutching and the brake. My questions are, can you over vent or run a motor too cold (all fearful "cold sieze") I have ridden in -20F before... Is there any where you should not vent as to weaken any structure? Is there any material better for mesh that will eliminate moisture and snow? (I have heard lots of guys use pet screen from hardware store or trampoline material) I will post up pics of what I come up with. |

ok a few things you want to vent the clutch side in the shock tower and the side panel and make sure you have a vent on the footwell side so air can pass through like open windows in a house make sure there prefilter vents or you'll have wet clutches that dont go anywhere exhaust vent same as clutch side but doesn't need prefilter material but you dont want alot of snow cooling your pipe which would = a loss in performance intake vents increase airflow so as need to increase fuel flow on carb sleds jet up to gain the extra performance from the added vents on the older sleds i will also vent the airbox to inside the belly pan put a couple 1in holes with some material over it because in the deep deep days when your intakes plugged your still getting some air to keep your sled moving i have never seen a sled over vented to where it hurt it enless snow was dumping on the pipe or on the clutches also when doing venting make sure you use nice holesaw for a nice finished prodcut and to keep the strenth of the panels your working on also nice tip is to take your aluminum rivets you have take some styro foam and scotch bright scuff of the rivets stick them in the styro foam and put the color paint you want on them to match your sled if your kit didn't come with prepainted rivets |

I highly doubt its possible to cold seize an engine with to much venting, that's what the thermostat takes care of. But then again never say never..

I don't think the venting would cause a cold seize. Running the wrong size jet at -20 could cause a problem. You can get by if you take it easy, but if you hold it at WOT for extended periods of time you'll seize it.

I run the pet screen in my vents and haven't had a problem with snow getting in. Plus that stuff is tough.

I also used pet screen, even on deep powder days it works
didn't think about painting the rivets might have to look into that!
