Question summit oil mixing

My buddy has a '98 Summit 670 that's using a lot of oil. He's tried adjusting it but it's still going through a ton of oil. Does anybody know if he'll be fine just mixing his own fuel and not putting anything in the oil res.? I know on my old RMK I couldn't do it because the pump put oil on the crank bearings too, but is it the same with the Summit? He wants to mix it so he knows he's getting the right ratio, and to save some oil and possibly run a little better without being so rich with oil. Anybody know about that? Thanks!

It could just be that the arm on the oil pump sticks in the open position. Known to happen on Doo's. Put an additional spring on the lever to make sure it closes when you're off the throttle.

You need to have an oil bottle to feed the RV shaft and water pump.

I have also heard that if a pump fails they will go to wide open just so the motor will not run out of oil. How do the plug look? Is he fouling them out or is it running just fine?

He's fouling plugs a LOT. They're blacker than black and he can't get a full ride out of a set of plugs before they're foulded.

Ya that's what I'm thinking too. He brought it over to the shop the other night and showed me, my guess was a bad pump too. Same thing happened on my brothers RMK last year. I'll tell him and if he can't find one I might be gettin back to ya. Thanks

we always pull the pump right off and throw on the bench .

make a little cover out of aluminum and bolt it on the the pump mounting spot . taker your oil pump tube and fill it half way up with your choice of 2 stroke oil then attatch it to the upper spigot. just keep it at the half way point on the tube ...if you get creative you can add a smaller bottle and zap strap it to the antifreeze jug or steering post mount

done no more oil pump problems .

then mix 500ML of 2 stroke oil to 5 gallons of gas .......ride

Same thing i doo. Not a big fan of the oil injection. Fill the hole the pump came out of with oil, fill the tube above it with oil as stated above and mix your gas(dont forget). 1 quart to a ten gallon tank = 40:1. good luck

Thanks for the input. I've always mixed my own oil in most of my 2-strokes and that's what I prefer to do too. Just didn't know if it'd cause problems if we took the oil res. off on that sled.
So it sounds like as long as he keeps oil going to the upper spigot he should be fine? How much oil does that run through? Like if he goes for an all-dayer is he going to need to put more oil in the tube before the end of the ride? And one more question (sorry, I'm not too familiar with his sled, just trying to help him), do I take the oil pump off too, or just the reservoir?
Thanks guys

actually its gravity fed so the bottom tube is the inlet and the top in the recirc ......if you use a clear pice of hose it is easy to watch ..couple that with a bottle and you are good to go ..just remember when you mix gas ..it scavenges the oil from it and takes it where it should go
