Default 2001 RMK 800 issues

I am looking at a 2001 RMK 800 as a back up/loaner sled. I have heard and read that the 800 engines of that era have crank issues. How common of a problem is this? I do not want to sink alot of money into a back up sled. Any other issues with this sled that I should be aware of before I get serious about it? Thanks.

All of the big block 800's are prone to crank issues. I've had some go 5000 miles some go 800 miles. Clutch maintenance is a key to longevity. The 01's w/o the exhaust valves were hard runners, they really liked the SLP single. The series 3 track on the 01's were not real durable and liked to throw lugs. Steering posts were a little weak, especially if a tall riser has been installed. If it's well cared for I wouldn't be too afraid of it as a second or loaner.

Had an '01 800 and ran it for 2yrs. with no problems. Like Dansyl159 stated, stay after the clutch. Make sure the weight bushings, rollers and pucks are in good shape. That's where a lot of the crank issues start. Pipe it and they rip. The stock skis are junk, so look at aftermarket ones. If the sled is in decent shape and you can get it for a good price, go for it.

He can balance the clutch for you and it will work better than new.

The main problem with the clutches was when they become unbalanced, the bearings couldn't take the vibration and they would fail resulting in a busted crank.

I asked Dan about going through mine, he told me to chit can it and buy a new one. That didn't impress me too much.

oh, I guess I should mention that I had 6000 trouble free miles.
Snapped the steering post off, put on a wildchild post, cured the problem.
Other than that, gas, oil and go.

Well as sledmanhof said ive had mine for 5 years and its been a great sled. A couple seasons ago i did break the crank but it had at least 5000 miles on it. Now after the new crank the thing works better than ever. Alo had wild child make me a steering post since they are alittle bit soft. Just hooked up nitrous on it so well see how that works this year.
