BCA is a decent set up, user friendly but...
It is limited to terrain/line of sight as found out this weekend !?

They're pretty much *all* going to be limited to line-of-sight.

Even my big scary commercial radio is still LoS.

Expensive equipment doesn't change laws of physics.

Easy to use so anyone can use it is key. If it's too complicated, most will leave it in the trailer. Found that out with one of my riding partners. Keep it simple for the non technical people.

Why am I paying that price for it then?

Snowmobiler tax, that's why. :P

Honestly, my #1 complaint about the BC-Link radio is its price. You just don't get a lot of radio for the money you spend on it.
Medium-ish power output, you do get weather channels on it which is nice, but that's about it. The speaker-mic is its biggest feature, but you can get that (minus the presets) on just about any radio.

Which leads me to my 2nd complaint about it, is that you can't use the radio as a radio without the speaker-mic attached. If they put a speaker/mic/PTT on the radio body and made it so that you could use the radio as a regular radio and leave the mic in a pack, that'd make the cost a bit more justifiable.

Otherwise the feature list of that radio is really lacking for a $150-ish piece of equipment.

$120 each, free shipping. Seen some used for $100, sold before I can inquire about them.

Still a lot of money for what you get IMO.
$60-80/ea would be acceptable.

I agree. Nothing cheap about snowmobiling or any motor sport .

The BC Link radio transmits at a max power of 1watt where as UHF/VHF radios can transmit up to 5watts so the range of the BC Link and those of UHF/VHF radios greatly differ. However, BC Link radios do get an overall better range than comparable FRS/GMRS radios like those made by Motorola, Cobra, etc. From BCA Staff experience, we have never experienced any issues with range during normal ski tour outings. Mechanized travel can run into range issues but as long as you test your radios and realize how the terrain you are in can affect the transmit range then it is not an issue to stay connected and avoid range issues while in the field.

Not really made for "bilers

No portable radio will work "great" for snowmobilers.

If you want good complete coverage, you're going to be putting in infrastructure (repeaters/backhaul) to get that coverage. CO's DTR system is a $2M/yr budget with 120+ sites across the state, and its coverage still gets spotty in the mountains. The portables are still line-of-sight radios, they're just line-of-sight to a repeater in a very good spot on the top of a mountain that provides good coverage.

More power doesn't give you a proportional increase in range.
I will say that again:
More power does not give you a proportional increase in range.

1 watt to 5 watts isn't going to help your range significantly. What it will do is make the signal a bit better at the receiver when you're at the edge of the low-power coverage area. It WILL NOT make your 1-mile radio stretch out 5 miles.

The receiver on the other end affects range too - a "deaf" radio won't be able to pick out a weak signal as well as a better-quality radio will. (Another reason for my dislike of the baofengs - their receivers are real shitty and suffer from a lot of other problems (intermod and selectivity).)

Good group management techniques makes radios a convenience, and it's rare we have issues with range.

I run all my radios at 1W (low power). Battery lasts longer, nicer for other users in the shared RF spectrum.
