All depends how far east you're headed in the states.

This.

I think there are 3 ports across the northern side of ND, but my guess is you will drop down in MT somewhere..

personally i would get out of canada asap... everythign is way more expensive when driving thru there and the speed limits sucks donkey balls.

not exactly sure what your best route is but i would choose a 24 hour portal, that is popular.. that way they get people in and out right away...

first trip i went thru a small town one in north dakota and well they ripped apart everythign in the truck and i sat there and watched for 1.5 hours.

next time i went thru the portal just north of shelby montana, and i was thru it in 5 minutes. on the way back we waited in line for 15 minutes and took less then 2 minutes to make it back into the states.

Mapquest has you coming through Portal in ND, but when we go to Regina for training we go through Noonan, ND which is straight south of Estevan.

Portal usually ends up in long waits or searches whereas the one north of Noonan is extremely quiet. We have never had to wait or been searched.

Portal is 24 hours whereas the one by Noonan is 9am-10pm CST.

I dont have any experience elsewhere. Although if you happen to drive on I-94 through Livingston, MT with a trailer, it could get interesting with the high winds.

*edit* - Not sure what would be betwen Regina and Alaska, but there is absolutely nothing south of Regina. It is probably the flattest part of the world and I don't even recall tree rows in the field. So with that said, if you are looking for scenery dropping into western Montana or farther west would be your best bet.

When do you plan on making the trip?
