Default Going to the dark side......800 REV build thread

Next weekend I'll be picking up my first skidoo......an 07 800 summit XRS, a friend of my dad's owns it and its sitting in his storage unit.....he wants it gone, so its mine for 500 bones. So for that price you may ask "what's wrong with it???" And the answer is, well.....I'm not sure. It starts but pops and backfires and won't rev up. I'm thinking its a DESS problem but I'll see if anyone here can enlighten me further. Any "must-do" mods for the rev chassis? I'm new to all things skidoo so educate me!

First "must doo" is make it an SHR 840/860, that motor is the #1 worst time bomb out there!!

Good luck and keep us updated !

That's what I keep hearing.......from my research it sounds like that 07 800R is either a win or lose, lots of people have said that if you make it past 1000 miles you got a winner. This one got 1200 on it before it started having this popping/backfiring issue. I do seem to notice a trend with my sleds though.......I love problem children . An 05 900 poo.....an 06 700 poo......and now an 07 800 doo haha.

Narrow the track, loose the heavy front springs, try to be nice to your elbows. That chassis has violent handling tendencies.

This is news to me...

If it still has the stock Challenger LITE track, I recommend relocating the front arm mount 1 inch up from where it is now. This will help with the trenching problem the track is notorious for.

Ask if the primary clutch was updated at all? We had a problem with bushings and especially the spring cup cover bushing.

And if the motor has it's original 1200miles on it, I would be looking to replace it with a new shortblock or new crank and top end without going much further.

Of course try to figure out your problem right now. It could be a DESS problem, it could be a compression issue, it could be reeds, it could be a few things. If you don't find out what the problem is now, don't be surprised if it shows up again after you freshen the motor.

It should be a solid sled after these things are taken care of. Bigbores, new track, vent kits, etc etc are all nice, but should only be considered if the money is there to do them.

Same with the y-pipe, their prone to splitting at the joint. Also, the oil pump is known for wearing out and sticking open causing high oil consumption. Bigworm06(I think) on DT rebuilds and adds a bearing to prevent wear. Lot of doo guys swear by them. Got mine back from him in a week or so.

Glad you caught the problem before it became serious, I wasn't as lucky...

It goes, just hoping to be able to get out and enjoy the snow more this year. I put a whopping 120 miles on my sled last year!
