I drop in from time to time, but rarely post. I hate FB, but sadly that is where the action is. Other forums I am a member of are slowly fading away as well. I prefer the forum format so much more. I guess people cannot open more than one tab.

As others have posted the Snowmachine market is shrinking as well. More people getting out than are getting into the sport. I haven't sledded in several years now. When I owned a sled I didn't own any ATV's. I now own two quads and a SXS.

Still checking in here. Winter is still upon us and the field work and landscaping biz is at a stand still for now. Back to reality soon...

Question for those that use radios, what brand or type are you using for group comms? Not looking for SAT radio as we typically are close to towns etc. Recommendations? ?

Don't buy a baofeng. They're complicated, and the radio itself is shit. They're pushed hard on the internet by people who don't know shit about radios, they think that fancy buttons and features make a radio "good".
Only thing they're good at is being cheap.

Lots of guys run teh BCA BC Link radios. They're decent, have some neat features, but there's things I don't care for with them.
One, the price... you spend a lot of money for not a lot of radio.
However, they're well set up for sledding out of the box, and they're really easy to use.
Two, the handset has to be attached to the radio part for the radio to work. Unlike a radio with a speaker-mic that can still be used as a radio without the mic attached, the RF deck/body and speaker-mic pendant BCLink must be connected for the radio to do anything.

If you're looking for a good radio and a good GPS, especially if you ride with a wife/kids/etc, check out the Garmin Rino's. Biggest advantage here is the ability to send your location to another Rino unit over the air.
So your wife gets stuck "in the trees", you get an icon where she is on the map page of your Rino.
There are optional speaker-mics available for them.
Also, the old super-basic Rinos still work with the new ones, and still do the location polling. Don't have to drop $700/ea on a brand-new one - scope out ebay or craigslist for older models.

On a budget, I'd recommend a decent FRS/GMRS radio, the kind you can buy at sporting goods stores. Go with a name-brand (Kenwood, Motorola come to mind) radio and you'll get good performance (as best you can get within the legal limitations of the band) and well-featured for a reasonable price. Loads of accessories available (earpieces, speaker-mics, etc).
You can find a good radio for about $30/ea, usually sold in 2- or 3-packs.

i like the bca links just for the fact i don't have to take off my gloves and helmet. you can use them with the sled running and the mic clips to the strap on your backpack up by your shoulder. great way to make a large group manageable. I also have the rhinos and like them but you have to pull them out of your pack every time and you cant hear them when you sled is running. the bca makes a beep after you let of the mic on everyone's radio so if your suck we just cue it 3 time and then tell your location.

Thanks for the info. Couple of others have the BCA units too. Found some new for $119 ea.

Thanks mule, as always. Lots of info to look into. Sounds like the BCA unit was popular with the club too. See what we can find in the next few weeks.
