Default UP Ride Jan 25-28th

Boy did we get lucky on our trip to the UP this past weekend. We stayed at the Wildlife Refuge Cabins in South Range, Mi. For about 12 days prior to our arrival that area got dumped on with a bit more than 2 feet of snow. We unloaded the machines that afternoon and hit the snow. Took the North Freda loop and started to poke our way through the woods and got a bit lost. Working out way out we managed to get to a spot where we got 5 of 8 sleds stuck and took a bit more than an hour to dig them out. Now we were having fun. Mileage total for the afternoon 29.

Then on Friday night while were were there we god a nice fresh 13" of fluff LES snow for our Saturday ride. Saturday we hit the Woods with Dave the owner of the RFC as our guide. We even had a warm trail side treat courtesy of the Muff Pot I installed on my sled. This was a great way to go because the trails were packed with the weekend warriors. The Mosquito Bar was just packed with people that were both happy to be riding and complaining about bumpy trails. But what do you expect with that kind of traffic. For this day of riding we put on about 45 miles of back woods riding. Lots of untouched logging roads, just waiting to be carved up. Some hill climbing in between the trees and a bunch of stucks that took a bit to dig out of.

Sunday was more of the same, Dave Guided us further in to the backwoods to find even more untouched logging roads, paths and just plain weaving our way through the trees to find the next clearing or lake with untouched snow. Even more stucks and this time we even go the guide stuck on his Summit with a 163" track. This day we managed to git a bit more mileage on the machines at 54 miles.

At this point we racked up a whopping 129 miles, but boy did we work for the miles and had a blast doing it.

Monday We awoke to another dumping of snow. This time it was a Heavy wet snow that dropped about 8" in the parking lot at the WRC. this day was a trail ride day. The plan was to get to Copper Harbor for lunch then make our way to the tip of the Keweenaw and look out at Manatu Island. That plan devolved very quickly once we got north of Calumet. The snow up there was much thinner and trails were not as good as we were told. The plan changed, and we decided to try and find the lookout on the cliffs near the Vansville bar. And with my keen navigation skills we did find it after a few wrong turns and some dead end logging roads. Then we headed to Eagle Harbor for some late lunch. The trail in to the Harbor was passable but snow was also pretty thin in spots. Back on the trails we decided to had back south before it got too dark as one of the riders new RMK had a headlight problem where the housing had partially fallen out of the hood he could not see very far in front of the bumper. Took Trail three all the way back to South Range, Some good spots and some not so good. Mileage total was 122.

Trip total miles on the sleds was 251. But we had fun and good snow conditions for what we wanted to do.

Looks like a couple nice spots and a good start to the snow! We were up out of Twin Lakes on Monday. Love that area!
